The Ministry Residency Program (MRP) at Elizabeth City Evangelical Methodist Church (ECEMC) is designed for followers of Christ with a calling to full-time vocational ministry yet limited vocational ministry experience to have a space to explore their calling and gain valuable experience alongside our church staff. The development process combines theological study and practical ministry application focused on clarifying the Lord’s calling, identifying the resident’s passion and skill set, and creating a personalized plan to prepare the resident for a future in ministry.

General Requirements

  • Strong Christian character and evidence of continued growth in Jesus
  • Completion of, or working toward, a 4-year ministry degree from an accredited university (or its equivalent)
  • Commitment to a Wesleyan/holiness understanding of faith as outlined in the EMC Discipline
  • Ability to clearly articulate a calling from God to vocational Christian ministry
  • Willingness to submit completely to the discipleship process of the MRP
  • Support and commitment to the church’s mission and vision

General Responsibilities

  • Meet weekly with the Senior Pastor (or designated mentor) for discipleship, theological and/or ministry education, reflection, assessment, and prayer
  • Participate in various ministry opportunities as assigned, such as (but not limited to):
    • Organizing and/or leading an initiative or event
    • Discipleship of a new believer
    • Sharing the gospel
    • Planning worship services
    • Researching, writing, and delivering sermons
    • Forging partnerships with civic, community, or nonprofit groups and/or leaders
    • Planning and leading meetings
    • Facilitating a small group
    • Teaching a Sunday School class
    • Assisting with Vacation Bible School
    • Engaging with church members through care contact ministry
    • Familiarity with facility needs and readiness to pitch in to ensure ministry readiness when needed
  • Accompanying the pastor (or designated mentor) in various ministry contexts, such as Board/committee meetings, congregational care appointments, visitations, counseling sessions, etc.
  • Timely completion of reading assignments with preparation for interaction and discussion
  • Fill in roles as needed or directed, to familiarize and gain experience in all kinds of ministry
  • Other duties as directed by the Senior Pastor (or designated mentor)

Time Commitment

30 hours/week, including Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, and Tuesday morning staff meetings.

Program Duration

The MRP is for a term of one calendar year, with the option of adding an additional year if the Senior Pastor deems it necessary, with Board of Stewards approval. While there is no promise of a full-time position at ECEMC upon completion of the program, the church is dedicated to owning the success of our residents and will work to assist them in finding ministry roles through our denominational connections.
