Choices

The choices people make can say a lot about their character. The book of 1 Samuel, written to record the life of Israel’s last judge (Samuel), the rise and fall of Israel’s first king (Saul), and the preparation for Israel’s greatest king (David), is filled with characters making choices of consequence. Some are good. Others are very bad.

“Choices’ is a sermon series that explores some of the key events in a crucial window of Israel’s history. We will see in the faithfulness and treachery of figures and events many have known since their first Sunday School class God’s providential purposes at work, and the theological insights gleaned from the inspired Scripture’s telling of history will offer guidance for being the faithful people of God for today.

Kingdom Come

“Everyone tried to touch him” (Luke 6:19, NLT)

Everywhere Jesus went the crowds followed. There was something truly unique and magnetic about him. In the Gospel of Luke, it is mentioned over 30 times that the crowds gathered around him, seeking to get as close as they could, trying to touch him if at all possible. People couldn’t get enough of Jesus.

Kingdom Come is a sermon series that looks closely at some of the most poignant accounts of this phenomenon throughout the gospel. It will seek to explain the question of what it was about Jesus that drew people so close. Together we will get a clearer picture of who this heavenly man was and still is, and we will be invited to draw closer to him ourselves.

Building Blocks of Life

The Psalmist exclaimed: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3) We live in an age of destroyed foundations in society, in families, in the church, and in individual lives. But there are truths, foundational principles, doctrines, that never go out of style. You could call these the building blocks of life.

As believers we often get distracted in living life and forget the basic building blocks. What are these essential truths that form a sure foundation for life? The Apostle Paul reminds us of these in 1 Corinthians 1:30. They are: wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.

Whether these are new teachings or well-known to us, we all benefit from examining them. And lest we forget, these principles are not formed by our own strength–they are found in Christ Jesus alone and are received by grace through faith in him.

Foretaste

“We have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory.” (Romans 8:23, NLT)

The Christian life is filled with many hardships and challenges. The Apostle Paul speaks of its “sufferings and glory,” that is, what is faced today but also what is hoped for tomorrow.

God has given his Spirit to those who belong to his Son. The Spirit helps us in our weakness, gives us freedom, direction, and life. He is the firstfruit, a taste, of the inheritance that awaits those who long for the salvation that has begun to be brought to completion.

Foretaste is a sermon series devoted to the exploration of life in the Holy Spirit as presented in Romans 8. God has provided everything needed for his children to persevere. He leads, he empowers, he assures.

Revival 2023

Join us for our 2023 spring revival with Rev. Charles Elliott, May 21-24. This is our annual event where we set time apart as the body of Christ to allow the Holy Spirit to refresh, renew, and revive. Nursery care (0-3 yrs) will be available each evening by our wonderful volunteers! Bring your family and friends for this exciting time of seeking God together as the body of Christ!

About Our Speaker

Rev. Charles “Chuck” Elliott serves as Associate Pastor of Brookside Church in Chillicothe, OH. A graduate of Circleville Bible College in Circleville OH (now Ohio Christian University) and Wesley Biblical Seminary in Jackson, MS, he is married to his lovely wife, Jenny, and together they live near the Scioto River where they enjoy forests and farms so characteristic of the wide-open spaces and hilly lifts of beautiful southern Ohio.

Both Chuck and Jenny were drawn to Jesus and gave themselves to God and His purposes very early in their lives. Chuck served as a missionary in Hungary and Ukraine for 10 years, as a Christian educator in Ohio and Mississippi for 6 years, and as a cattle producer in Ohio for 10 years. While serving in these capacities, across the past 30 years, Chuck has served multiple pastoral roles within the Church, mostly bi-vocationally. Jenny has served communities in both Ohio and Mississippi as a pharmacist for her entire professional life. Together they have sought to be faithful living witnesses of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection by conforming to the gospel and by connecting in meaningful ways with others in collegiate and congregational life.

Chuck and Jenny enjoy traveling with friends, being in nature, trying new recipes, listening to most music, drinking African and South American coffees, exploring open-air farm markets, and watching BritBox.

Over the course of revival week, Chuck will be sharing a series of messages on the theme, “True Christian Daring: Proclaiming the multifaceted nature of Holy Love in the Harbor of Hospitality.”
