Catechism – Week 1 – Who is God?
Who is God?

It is impossible to fully explain who God is, but to understand anything about God, we must have a starting point. We will focus on a few of his attributes.

Isaiah 42:5 – Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it. (ESV)

What has God done?
God has created the universe (heavens and earth) and gave life to the people on earth.

What does this say about God?
He is eternal1, he is incredibly powerful, and he is incredibly wise to create a universe that works.

Matthew 5:48 – You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (ESV)

What is God’s character like?
God’s character is perfect, which means that at all time he acts with love (1 John 4:8), righteousness, and justice (Psalm 97:2). God always does what is good and never does what is bad.

Scripture Memory Verse:

Hebrews 1:10 – You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands. (ESV)

Who is God?
God is the eternal one who is infinite in power, knowledge, love, and goodness.

Adults and older students are encouraged to receive a fuller explanation from Dr. Tim Tennent (President of Asbury Theological Seminary) by clicking this link.

1Parent note:  since God created the universe, the properties of this universe (such as time and space) will not apply to God, which means he must be timeless and spaceless.
