{"id":5945,"date":"2020-06-11T11:57:58","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T15:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ecityemc.org\/resources\/?p=5945"},"modified":"2020-06-11T12:14:34","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T16:14:34","slug":"why-im-not-an-inerrantist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ecityemc.org\/resources\/blog\/06\/11\/why-im-not-an-inerrantist\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I\u2019m NOT an Inerrantist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few years ago, as I completed the journey toward ordination we had to take a series of vows\u00a0 that affirmed our position within the denomination. One of those positions was that of the infallibility of the Scriptures\u2014meaning that they are without error.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normally, such people are called inerrantists. While I happily said the vows, I hesitate to define myself as such. I believe the Scriptures are true, trustworthy, and authoritative for the Christian. However, I have deep reservations about defining myself by what I\u2019m not, rather than what I am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human beings have a pernicious tendency to become the very things we set ourselves against.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A while back I had a conversation with a strong inerrantist, who in seeking to harmonize the text, abused the text.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At some level, wanting to preserve the idea of what the Scriptures are not, he didn\u2019t allow them to speak as they are. To preserve his idea of inerrancy, he denied their authority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem of defining ourselves by what we are not is the tendency to become the very thing we set ourselves against.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Antimovements<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past few weeks, we&#8217;ve seen this tendency of antimovements manifest in many ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6>Antifa<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antifa (short for anti-fascist) is more fascistic than those they set themselves against. Fascism uses force to suppress opposition in order to gain control. Antifa is purposefully violent against their political opponents in order to instill fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Seattle, Antifa has created their own space. Although they rail against the police, their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/antifa-seattle-capitol-hill-autonomous-zone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople\u2019s Force\u201d is more authoritarian, implementing their own version of stop and frisk and holding hostages (as the populace did not vote them in to control this neighborhood).<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h6>Antiracist<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term &#8220;antiracist&#8221; is growing in popularity, but I fear the same thing is happening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecityemc.org\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/BLM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5946 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecityemc.org\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/BLM-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ecityemc.org\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/BLM-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.ecityemc.org\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/BLM.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a> Perhaps the most racist post I\u2019ve seen is this one. She talks of her experience as a teacher that when children throw, break, slam things, and melt down that we recognize it as trauma manifesting. Compassion and love, rather than discipline, is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know she may have been well intentioned but let\u2019s be clear&#8230;black people are not children. Their children are of course children but as a class of people they are not children. I have no doubt that if one of this teacher\u2019s peers acted in a similar manner, she would be horrified and want the teacher fired. Why? Because adults have agency and the expectation to control their emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I suspect this teacher and the few people I saw post such nonsense have very little encounters with black people. A<\/span>s a class of people, black people are not weak, fragile children, needing to be coddled. They don\u2019t lack strength, agency, or the ability to make wise decisions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In trying to be antiracist, she becomes the very thing\u00a0 she stands against.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A mob has <a href=\"https:\/\/losangeles.cbslocal.com\/2020\/06\/10\/ucla-professor-on-leave-gordon-klein\/\">formed against a UCLA professor for not giving students special consideration according to their race, in accordance with federal law.\u00a0<\/a>The school has put him on leave, despite acting according to school policy.<\/p>\n<p>In seeking to be antiracist, they became the very thing they hate.<\/p>\n<h4><b>So What am I?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I\u2019ll say I\u2019m against racism, I won\u2019t call myself an \u201cantiracist.\u201d I will call myself a dignitist\u2014 believing all people are worthy of a level of respect and dignity as made in God\u2019s image. I am a justice-seeker\u2014wanting to see justice accomplished within all levels of society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course the antiracists will say, \u201cYes, we do too.\u201d But again, when the target is to be against racism rather than for dignity and justice, our pursuits often devolve into supporting injustice and undignified treatment of others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We see NYT columnists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/05\/opinion\/whites-anti-blackness-protests.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">telling readers to cut off family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they don\u2019t go to a rally or donate to an approved cause. \u201cSorry grandma, I know COVID-19 may kill you but you need to come with this mob if you want to see your grandkids.\u201d We see murals of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disrn.com\/news\/mural-of-cop-hanging-from-noose-discovered-in-houston\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lynched policemen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> graffitied on walls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we identify ourselves by what we aren\u2019t, our hearts will justify the most wretched aspects of who we are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t want to set up a weak man and suggest that all antiracists would endorse such nonsense. I would caution us about the nature of the human heart. When we identify ourselves by what we aren\u2019t, our hearts will justify the most wretched aspects of who we are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We mutter \u201cthe enemy of my enemy is my friend,\u201d as we make unholy alliances.
