Isaiah Book Study (2022-23)

In the Gospel of Luke, it is written that Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Lk. 4:16-21 ESV)

The Book of Isaiah has been called the “Fifth Gospel” and the mountain peak of the prophets. Isaiah himself has been called the Prince of the Prophets. Isaiah is quoted in the N.T. more than any other book except the Psalms and reveals more about the Life of Jesus than any other book in the Old Testament.

Isaiah provides us a vision of the Holy One of Israel—his character, his works, and his methods of accomplishing his purposes in the world. Isaiah takes us from the formation of the people of God through redemption and covenant all the way to the coming new heavens and new earth. He forces us to exam our lives, our church, our nation in the light of the vision of the Holy One. He lays a foundation for understanding how the Lord deals with all nations as well as with his own people. In much of the book, we feel like we are reading from today’s headlines. At other times we catch a vision of how things ought to be and one day will be.
